- In earlier times, the leaves of the tea tree were steeped to make tea, hence the name. Tea tree essential oil is a concentrated liquid compound distilled from the leaves of the Melaleuca Alternifolia tree, native to the northeast coast of New South Wales, Australia. The oil is said to have valuable antiseptic and antifungal properties due to compounds called terpenoids, and is used in many personal care products and medicines today. Tea tree oil is said to be good for relieving colds, coughs and flu. It is used to treat acne, fungal infections, dandruff, infections, athlete's foot and is said to soothe sore muscles.
